Monday mysteriosophy mycterism

Way back in 1958 when I invented skateboarding for myself there simply were no girls on skateboards. Fast forward to today and girls are all over the sidewalks on skateboards.

Now it seems that these women are out numbering men as gamers.

The Entertainment Software Association has just released its 2014 report on the state of the video game industry (PDF), and as the title of this post suggests, there have been some significant shifts since the last report.

Let's tackle the most interesting one first: Females have become the dominant gamer, claiming 52% of the pie.

That's impressive, but perhaps more so is the fact that women over the age of 18 represent 36% of the game-playing population, whereas boys aged 18 and under claim a mere 17%.

Statistics like these challenge the definition of "gamer." Some might say that it's a stretch to call someone who only plays mobile games a "gamer" (Candy Crush anyone?). Mental hurdle aside, the reality is that anyone who plays games, regardless of the platform, is a gamer.

Muslim leader (and ISIS supporter) Anjem Choudary once said anyone who drinks "should be given 40 lashes in public". He also tried getting these pictures removed from the internet.

The president of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, has called the ISIS militants "embarrassing" to the religion and urged Islamic leaders to unite in tackling extremism.

With $2 billion in the bank — thanks to military victories in the past few months — ISIS has become the most well-funded terrorist group in the world.

UCI in Irvine CA has one and most people don't know this.
Tucked away from major roadways and nestled amid more than 80 acres of forest sits a massive warehouse-like building where inside, a device that can produce temperatures hotter than the sun has sat cold and quiet for more than two years.

But the wait is almost over for the nuclear fusion reactor to get back up and running at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

"We're very excited and we're all anxious to turn that machine back on," said Adam Cohen, deputy director for operations at PPPL.

The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) has been shut down since 2012 as it underwent a $94 million upgrade that will make it what officials say will be the most powerful fusion facility of its kind in the world.

It is expected to be ready for operations in late winter or early spring, Cohen said.

Peer-to-peer lodging service Airbnb has agreed to hand over data on 124 of its hosts in New York as part of an investigation by the state's Attorney General into the operation of illegal hotels.

The AG first requested data for almost all of Airbnb's hosts in the state, but after "legal wrangling," that number was whittled down to the current 124.

The data in question will be unredacted personal information, meaning names and addresses.

In a blog post, Airbnb's David Hantman said, "nothing about these hosting profiles suggests [the Attorney General] is after anyone but individuals who may be flagrantly misusing our platform."

Airbnb is confident that the targets of this request are hosts considered to be "bad actors," but they don't explain what classifies somebody as a "bad actor."

Burning Man Starts Today!

Burning Work

Burning Man is an annual festival that began in 1986. Tens of thousands of people gather at the 'Playa' in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create a temporary wooden city dedicated to community, art, self-expression and self-reliance. They depart a week later, leaving no trace whatsoever. Let it burn!
