Saturday Matinee

California doesn't get all the action; The Washington Post is one of many news outlets reporting that the east coast of North America got a good view of a meteor, with more than 300 sightings from Canada to Florida. Did you see it? If so, did you have your dashcam on?

I worked in restaurants when I was 14 and through out my high school years. One of my jobs was washing dishes  at The Ancient Mariner Restaurant on Coast Highway in Newport Beach CA. We were  not allowed to eat the cheese cake, but everyone did it anyway.

Being a typical kid I would squirt some whipped cream on my cheese cake. Every now and then I would pick up a full can of whipped cream and it would not squirt out, there was no gas in it. Apparently the kitchen helper, a gang type dude from San Bernardino, would release the gas into his mouth and breath it in.

I was to young to know what he was doing or why he was doing it. I just thought that he was weird.

(The restaurant manager eventually had a lock installed on the refrigerator to keep the cheese cake and whipped cream safe from the employees.)

Now at 62 I understand what he was doing. He was a front runner to what has now become epidemic among the Rave crowd.

Southern California sees a surge in cheap  and quick recreational drug.

Given that seniors tend to hold positions of power and influence in our society, it’s conceivable that they’ll refuse to be forced into retirement on the grounds that such an imposition would violate their human rights (and they’d be correct in that assessment.

"The U.S. government is expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic headed into and out of defense contractors to include far more of the country's private, civilian-run infrastructure. As a result, more private sector employees than ever before, including those at big banks, utilities and key transportation companies, will have their emails and Web surfing scanned as a precaution against cyber attacks."

Alto introduced the WIMP interface — windows, icons, menus, pointer — that defines virtually every desktop GUI in use today. If the subsequent ubiquity is a measure of predictive accuracy, the Alto team must have been right in their theories about personal computing. Fifty years ago, the word “computer” had a very different meaning.

Apple just introduced two-factor authentication for Apple ID accounts, and there might already be some considerable urgency for it.
